What is a Marriage and Family Therapist?
-- M F T --
MFTs are clinical psychotherapists and mental health counselors who are licensed by over 40 states, including New York, California and Massachusetts. MFTs have met requirements for licensure which include holding a related doctoral or two-year Master's Degree (M.A.), passage of comprehensive written and oral examinations, and at least 1,500 hours in New York (or 3,000 hours in California) of education, training, and supervised experience. MFTs are relationship specialists who evaluate and therapeutically treat individuals, couples, families and children. MFTs are trained in clinical psychological methods.
MFTs can help individuals of all ages, including couples, families and groups, to achieve more satisfying personal functioning and healthy relationships with others on all levels of life. MFTs work with their clients in gaining improved functioning in marriage/partnering and family relationships, as well as productive work and educational achievement.
Continuing Education Courses are required in most states, which encourage MFTs to be trained in, and apply as needed, many new and innovative therapeutic methods, diagnoses, and interventions to help their client populations.
Psychotherapy services of MFTs are considered a medical expense, and may be eligible for insurance billing and payment.
